TDEE and the AI Macro Calculator

TDEE is your estimated daily energy burn. Hammr uses a formula at first, then prefers a measured value from logged food and weight change when it trusts the data.

TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) is the maintenance calorie estimate behind Adaptive Macros. If TDEE is wrong, every target stacked on it is wrong — so Hammr treats it as something to measure, not a one-time quiz answer.

Formula path (day one)

Hammr can estimate TDEE from:

  • Mifflin-St Jeor using height, weight, age, and sex, times an activity multiplier, or
  • Cunningham if lean body mass is known.

This is what you get before there is enough food and scale data.

Measured path (after you log)

When logging looks consistent, Hammr back-calculates:

measured TDEE ≈ average calories eaten − energy implied by weight change

over roughly two weeks. If measured TDEE diverges more than about 35% from the formula, Hammr rejects it — that usually means missed logs, not a new metabolism.

AI Macro Calculator

The AI Macro Calculator / TDEE survey is the onboarding and settings path where you confirm stats, activity, and goal. It seeds the formula path. It does not freeze your calories for the year. Adaptive Macros keep updating from Recovery, weight trend, and activity after that.

How to help it stay honest

  • Log food most days, including weekends.
  • Log weight several times a week, same conditions when you can.
  • Don’t expect magic from three logged meals and one weigh-in.
